Brothers Noah and Jacob Thompson were on a fishing trip in Mexico when they discovered a juvenile oarfish washed up on the beach. Oarfish, which can grow up to 110 feet long, are normally found in deep water, so finding one in shallow water is rare. The Thompsons were able to guide the oarfish back into deeper water before it disappeared. Live oarfish sightings off the coast of Baja have occurred before, but the reasons for their appearance remain a mystery. Oarfish are often seen as mythical creatures and are considered harbingers of earthquakes in Japanese folklore, although new research has debunked this belief.
