Orangutans Highlight Moment When They Got Broken
19/09/2023

We often overlook the fact that animals in the wild are prone to breaking bones. It's only natural - they run, jump, chase prey, and climb, putting themselves at risk of injury. Depending on the animal, falls from trees or tumbles down hills can be common occurrences.

It's not surprising then that a large number of wild animals suffer from broken bones at some point in their lives. For some unlucky creatures, a broken bone can lead to their demise as predators take advantage of their vulnerability.

However, for others, these bones can heal over time, albeit not perfectly, allowing them to live on. And when it comes to orangutans, broken bones are so prevalent that researchers have come to expect them in the wild. Believe it or not, at least half of adult orangutans have experienced one or more fractured bones.

These apes are known for their agility, strength, and ability to swing through trees and climb. However, their abilities are not foolproof, as orangutans frequently fall from trees. Sadly, many of these falls result in severe bone fractures upon impact with the ground.

The fortunate ones experience less severe injuries, but they still bear the scars and must endure weeks of pain as they heal. With their remarkable intelligence, orangutans have learned to adapt to their injuries. They develop thick scar tissue that acts as a protective shield over their broken bones. This adaptation allows them to continue their life in the wild, even with their untreated fractures. It's an extraordinary display of resilience and survival.

So the next time you see an orangutan swinging through trees at the zoo, remember that behind their playful and carefree exterior, they may carry the scars of countless falls. These incredible creatures have much more to teach us about the strength of the animal kingdom and the will to survive against all odds.
